The coaching system that you see is underpinned by 26 years of research and study by Marcus Bell into human performance, coaching science, skill acquisition and 3D/force plate biomechanics at University level and beyond. It represents a complete paradigm shift in how golf is learned and developed.
We start by exploring your movement vocabulary and analyse your movement literacy by challenging your ability to adapt. This invitation to elicit change is done using an ecological heuristic approach from the ground up.
GRF is well known in the field of Sports Biomechanics as ‘Ground Reaction Force’ but in our world of practical application it can almost be spun on it’s head. Force does precede motion and the ground does provide an equal and opposite force of magnitude and direction but that is where we look at it through a different lens.
It is NOT the GROUND that reacts, it is US! Our body reacts to the forces we apply to the ground and this makes golf, like any other motion, a REACTION. This reactive motion triggers the vestibular systemwhich provides sense of balance and information about body position that allows rapid compensatory movements in response to self-induced and externally generated forces.
In essence, this is the data that enables the brain to recognise the movement we create. The body then passes information received in a round-trip pattern from the spinal cord to the brain and back. When an action is completed, the cortex (brain) processes the information received during the action and sorts it into usable, retrievable pieces. This is now a memory and it is how we train that behaviour that enables us to embed that experience to access and recall these familiar motor patterns. This becomes our golf swing that will become a familiar feeling and habit you can learn to self-regulate.
How we train this reaction is unique to our coaching system in that we access the gait cycle and all it’s components using a somatic application.
SENSORY INPUT = MOTOR OUTPUT
By stimulating the system in a specific way we retrain the nervous system to elicit the changes you see in the lesson videos.
At the heart of the training system is exploring HOW YOU WALK!
Your golf swing consists of all the planes of motion present in how you walk, and through a complete disruption (the chaos!) plus re-introduction of missing parts, we invoke a complete re-organisation and self-optimisation of the system. This results in a full swing self-optimisation and it is INFINITY that is at the heart of it. It is present in all your motion.
Here you can see an example of how INFINITY presents itself in how you interact with the ground when walking and swinging a golf club.
Walking (pressure traces)

The ground interaction during one cycle of gait bot only produces an infinity timing-wise between the feet but also through the feet.
If you overlap the traces from both feet it also creates INFINITY. Many people’s patterns DON’T.

Working with the GRFi coaching system and training equipment will train the nervous system to accept and recognise these new movement maps and elicit a state of natural performance when the learning environment is set to the required task constraints. Ultimately, we look and react to the golf shot and surroundings, as we do in every other aspect of our life regarding movement.
Movement (muscular contralateral chains)
The muscular chains (fascial lines) that play a dominant role in rotation and posture are the contralateral chains. They spiral around the body in opposition appearing in an infinity shape form.

COM movement in walking and in the golf swing

Here you can see the up and down motion in time of the centre of mass (COM) in both walking and the golf swing. Similar mechanics used in walking are moving the COM in these directions in the golf swing.
